Over one hundred and twenty years ago, on October 27, 1888, a group of pioneer farmers gathered in the Clay County Courthouse to set the foundation for a local group whose purpose would be to lessen the financial burden of their neighbors in the event of a catastrophe. The concept was born of a necessity for economic survival – by banding together, the losses of a few would be spread among the mutual’s member pool. In those years, if insurance coverage was even available, the existing companies charged premiums that were cost prohibitive to most.
